Joint Pug Clubs Championship Show
In early February I travelled over to Churchdown in Gloucester to attend the Pug Clubs Joint Championship Show, which was hosted by The Wales and West of England Pug Dog Club. The Judges on the day were Mother and Son - Gail and Joel Saffer (Ragemma).
I am pleased to report that Rio was second in Open Dog, and that Ruby was 2nd in Open Bitch (to the eventual CC winner). It was Ruby's first time up in Open. Ruby is not 2 until May, but because there was no Yearling Class available to enter had to put her up "with the big girls". Delighted that she held her own.

There's a New Boy at Phouka ...

On 21st March a very special little man came to live with me, and the Culcavey Crazies. I had seen him on Facebook via a post shared by PDWRA NI, and I knew I had to do something ….
"George" as I now call him, was surrendered to Monaghan Dog Pound by a Puppy Farmer. Carrick Dog Shelter had put up an urgent re-homing plea for him, another 6 year old Pug (whois coming up to PDWRA NI to go into Foster), and two other pug crosses (who are now thankfully in rescue).
George is 10 years old, and an ex-stud dog - he was probably surrendered because he was no longer able to produce puppies due to his age. He was extremely dirty and is underweight. As soon as I got him home, my friend Kenny and I gave him a good bath, and gave him a pamper - glands, ears, wrinkle, anal glands, the works. It is amazing what a little TLC can do!
I have been giving him 3 feeds a day to try and build him up, and will continue to do so until I am happy with his weight gain. He'll be going to the Vets for an MOT to see what he needs, and whatever that may be, I'll make sure he gets it.

BOAS Testing - Rio
Rio was BOAS tested at the Scottish Pug Club Championship Show on Sunday 14th April 2019. I am happy to report that he was graded BOAS Grade 1, which means that under the Northern Pug Dog Clubs National Health Scheme he will earn his Gold Health Testing Certificate (his Patella score is 0/0).The results have been submitted to the Scheme Manager - looking forward to receiving Rio's Gold Certificate in the post.
South Tipperary Championship Show
On Saturday 4th May we attended our first Irish Championship of the year at Holycross (near Thurles) in Co. Tipperary. Rio (aka Boynhams Brasilia, Jun Ch) won his 6th Green Star and RBOB…. 6 down, one to go ……
Scottish Kennel Club Championship Show - May

At SKC on Sunday 19th May, Rio, aka Boynhams Brasilia won Open Dog and his 1st CC under Breed Specialist Don Mowbray. To me CC's are the "holy grail" so it was a great win. Overall it was a great day out, spent in the company of good friends.
One down …. two to go …
This is Don Mowbray's fabulous critique on Rio…. "OD (9 3) 1 Murphy's Boynhams Brasilia, Jun Ch. A truly masculine boy! Well constructed Dog. Excellent bone and substance, with a superb front assembly. A magnificent head, excellent hind angulation, black mask, lustrous dark eyes and excellent ear-set, coat in immaculate condition, moved with consummate ease and drive."

Three Counties Championship Show & The Wales & West of England Pug Club Championship Show
Rio and I headed over to England for a few days in early June to Show in the West of England. We were based in beautiful Malvern.
On Thursday June 6th Rio won 2nd in Open Dog (10 dogs in the class) at Three Counties under Breed Specialist Anne Phillips (Jansclan). On Sunday 9th of June, he was 3rd in a class of 5 ( the other 4 were GB Champions), under Breed Specialist Alison Mount (Pollywops) at the Wales and West Club Show. I am delighted that this young dog is holding his own "over the water".

Health Testing - Ruby
Ruby has had her Visual Health Assessment, Patella's Checked, PDE test done and has been HV X-rayed, and I am happy to say that under the Northern Pug Dog Club's National Pug Health Scheme she has obtained a Silver grading (we are waiting for the Silver Certificate to come in the post along with Rio's Gold one). Ruby will be BOAS tested shortly along with Peanut and Tor (who are also both graded Silver), and Poppy.
Poppy had had her VHA and Patella Check, and is PDE N/N. She is also HV Clean.

The Irish Pug Dog Club Championship Show

At the Irish Pug Dog Club Championship Show in July, Rio won Reserve Green Star Dog. The Star of the day was Rocco, aka Ir. Ch Habiba Diva Fever, CW12, Jun Ch, who returned to the ring after 5 years to win BVIS. The old boy enjoyed his day out and showed his wee heart out.
Coleraine Championship Show
At Coleraine Championship Show on 10th August, Rio won his 7th Green Star and BOB under Toy Specialist Stephen Lloyd (Owenvarna). Hence, subject to IKC confirmation, he can now be known as IR CH Boynhams Brasilia, Jun Ch. He literally has been shown in Ireland a handful of times this year, and was lightly shown here last year too, so it's pretty good going. Glad to get it over and done with to be honest!
I will now focus on showing him in the UK - we will try our best to get the 2 CC's he needs to become an English Champion. No mean feat!

Scottish Kennel Club Championship Show - August
At SKC Rio was placed 4th in Open Dog under Breed Specialist, Gillian McAleney. He was the only dog not a Champion in the class, so I was happy enough with the result.
Belfast Championship Show
Ruby returned to the ring (hadn't been shown since April), and was placed 4th and in Open Bitch (class of 9) - pleased enough with this result.
George Update
George has now been with me for 7 months and is a totally different dog. He has put on 2kg, his skin and coat are great, and he is a very happy boy. He fits in well with the rest of the Grumble. He is on Steroids and Biosolvin because he has soft palate issues (BOAS Grade 3) and he also has slipping Patellas (Grade 4). He is thriving in his new home!
